Connect request

Has a stranger ever brought unexpected happiness into your life? A “career girl” who had worked in the capital, I had moved to a new town where everyone seemed to have married and settled down early. So one Saturday night in midwinter, I found myself alone, trying to learn guitar.

Skimming LinkedIn on a break, a connect request popped up next to a picture of clean-shaven South Asian man in a message. “I am the headmaster of a school in a refugee camp,” it said. It’s easy to turn down requests for money, but ignoring the existence of someone in that situation seemed wrong. As it turned out, the choice to “accept” led to new friends all over the world.

Siddique, (that’s the Headmaster’s name), and I convinced a professor at the University of Tennessee (Lucien Ellington) to publish Siddique’s story for the Fall 2023 edition of Education About Asia. The refugee-created blog about the school, Life Destination School, offers glimpses into the struggles of people who may sometimes lack basic amenities, but not the will to find humor, hope, and solidarity.

Today is the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also World Refugee Day, June 20th, 2025. Please keep all “stateless” refugees in your thoughts.

    and grow short

  2. That’s a bit contradictory, tho true, as just after the solstice the daylight hours here in the northern hemisphere are long, but growing shorter. Were you born in Utah, Utahan?

  3. Thank you for this post. This is certainly an issue we should all be thinking about now and doing what we can. The riches you describe from your exchange(s) are an essential part of the storyl

    1. Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Annie! Yes, and it’s the truth. It does not hurt that my headmaster friend has a good sense of humor and charm.

  4. This is a sweet post Anne. I was happy to see you “liking” my post today. How are you doing? Hope you are doing well!

    1. Thank you, Katie! Yes, doing well. Today I visited a park in the region of Newport News, Virginia, and enjoyed being able to cross a large lake or river on a very large wooden footbridge. It offered wonderful breezes from the water on both sides. How are you???

      1. I am doing well—this week I had all 7–yes–7 of my grandchildren visiting me and my family—what a wonderful time it was! Then one of the families came for Easter brunch, and an Easter Egg Hunt–and just left awhile ago. 🙂 Now it is time to rest!! 🙂 I’m glad you had the experience of crossing a lake on a very large wooden footbridge—it sounds wonderful. 🙂 Happy, Easter to you Ann!! 🙂

      2. Thank you, Katie! Seven is a great number of grandchildren. It must be nice for them to have such loving and involved parents and grandparents…and to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt to boot! Happy for you. Best wishes for Spring!
